Welcome to Silver Birch Play Therapy!

At Silver Birch Play Therapy, we believe that play is more than just fun—it's a powerful tool to help children process and explore their emotions in a safe environment.

Play therapy can help children make sense of difficult life experiences or situations and explore feelings that may be having a detrimental effect on their emotional wellbeing and behaviour.

Play is a developmentally appropriate means of communication and self-expression for many children, and so play therapy sessions offer a safe, consistent environment in which children can freely express themselves in their own way and at their own pace.

The play therapist supports the child in their therapeutic process, developing a trusting relationship without judgement. Play therapy is to children, what counselling is to adults.

"Play is the language of children, and the way they communicate their feelings, thoughts, and experiences." — Virginia Axline, Play Therapy Pioneer

We also recognise the unique healing power of nature.  And if or when it is appropriate we incorporate natural elements into therapy to enhance the therapeutic process and foster emotional and physical healing. By blending traditional play therapy with nature-based interventions, we provide a holistic approach to support your child's growth and healing.

What is Play Therapy?

Play therapy is a proven, effective treatment that helps children express their thoughts and feelings in ways that are natural and comfortable for them. By engaging in play, children may work through trauma, anxiety, behavioural issues, or other emotional challenges in a safe environment.

I work using a ‘toolkit’ of toys, art materials, games, music and other playful activities to engage with children, fostering communication and self-expression. Through the process, children can develop new coping mechanisms, build confidence, and improve their overall emotional health.

What to Expect in a Session?

Each play therapy session typically lasts between 30 to 50 minutes and is conducted confidentially one-on-one with the child. It takes place at the same time and place on a weekly basis for a minimum of 12 weeks (likely 18-24) with regular reviews. Sessions are conducted in a private, confidential space.  The sessions may involve a variety of activities, including:

  • Role-playing

  • Art and Drawing

  • Games and Toys

  • Sand play
